Leinster - River Barrow

River Barrow
Co. Wexford

The seasons for the different fish on the Barrow are as follows: The salmon season runs from February 1st to September 30th.
The sea-trout season runs from February 1st to September 30th and the brown-trout season runs from March 1st to September 30th.

A lot of uncertainity appears to exist over the ownership of fishing rights on the river. Ownershiphas only been established on certain parts of the river, and most of the fishing on the river is probably free. The river has developed as a navigable waterway from Athy downstream and the locks and weirs on that 35-mile stretch have greatly altered the charachter of the river, making it more suitable for coarse fish and pike than for trout or salmon. At present it is not a notedsalmon river. A number of fish are taken every year at the weir at St Mullins and a few at Borris. Many reasons are given for the poor run of salmon. Including the extensive coastal drift net fishery and the obstacles the weir create for fish.

The trout fishing is described as fair to good with the average size of the trout probably reaching 3/4 lb. The best trout fishing is considered to be upstream of Monastrevin and on the tributaries, where fishing was excellent in the past and can still be. there are plenty of small trout downstream too as far as St Mullins. A feature of the River at St Mullins is the run of shad which comes every year in May. Anglers come from far and wide to fish them and they will take many baits, including a fly.

Borris Angling Club has about three miles of fishing on the left bank, extending downstream. this is a mixture of trout and salmon and coarse fishing. the trout fishing canbe very good and occasionally so too can the salmmon fishing. The best fishing is is the shallow water below the weir, due to the boats troling the river.

milford Angling Club has a half mile stretch of water midway between Carlow and Leighlinbridge. The water is fast and streamy. It holds a good stock of trout, with many ranging from from 10oz to 12lb. It is fly fishing only.

Monastrevin and District Angling club has approximately 15 miles of fishing on the Barrow upstream from the Dunrally bridge. This water produces about half a dozen salmon every season, but the trout fishing is good. The average weight is 3/4 but some to 4lb. The trout fishing is extends from the top to the bottom of the stretch, varying in quality. The are good hatches of sedges and blue winged olives and there is may-fly hatch
