Ulster - River Bann

River Bann
Co. Down

Salmon are taken in big numbers on the Lower Bann, more so than the upper Ban and the tributaries, The river seldom gets spring fish, and the fishing only really starts in early May. Sea Trout come in their numbers to the weir at Carnroe and above to some of the Tributaries.Lough Neagh Trout, known as dollaghan, add to good late season fishing, along with the good quality brown trout that are dispersed throughout the system. These trout weigh from 6-7lbs upwards.Often after flooding the fish run into the tributaries and can be fished using tactics similar to sea trout fishing..

The Lower Bann.

The Lower Bann is mainly a deep, slow , navigable channel with some fast runs near the weirs. It fishes best in low conditions. The main Salmon areas are at Culliff Rock (movangher), carnroe, Portne and the Cuts at Coleraine. Carnroe is a prime beat.fishing only starts at the start of May and the peak season is form mid-June to mid-July, this is a large run and there is good fishing form then until the end of the season on 30th September.

The Upper Bann.

The Upper Bann has a longer saeason than the Lower Bann, running from the 1st of March until the 31st of October. A drainage scheme has created adverse fishing conditions, previous to this it was noted for dollaghan, brown trout and late-run salmon. however it did make a good recovery and now hosts stocks of wild brown trout, with the three local angling clubs stock the river with takable brown trout. It can get a very good run of salmon from early July, depending on water conditions.
