 Dermot O’Carroll from Glencar House Hotel reports that the weather in June continued to be Mediterranean/Riviera quality with the exception of one deluge on June 9, which exceeded all records since 1988, thereby heavily flooding the river valley and briefly flushing the system.
The first fish of June went to Phillip Smith, a 5 lb salmon on Carragh Lake caught on a rapala (Scandinavian Devil).
Dr. Niall Mulvihill caught a 4 lb salmon on the Carragh using a Toby.
A return of the Mueri party (aka Fragel Rock), delightful Swiss guests at Glencar for 18 years, showed us once again their fishing expertise - for in spite of the low level of water in the system, Heinz Mueri expertly caught a 6.5 lb salmon in Pool 7 using a shrimp. Toni Meier caught a 3 and 4 lb salmon in Pool 6 and several days later caught a 5 and 4 lb beauty in Pool 6. Ernesto Schaufelberger had success on Caragh Lake using a repeller-spoon and caught a 3.5 lb salmon. Again, in Pool 2 he caught a 5 lb salmon using a shrimp. Trophy winner of 2002, Ernst Gubeli, caught a 3 and 4 lb salmon in Pool 6 and 7 using a shrimp.
Michele Marincola from New York continues to fish with her husband as we report. She had a nice 5 lb catch using a Toby in Cloon Lake.
The overall month’s accolades goes to our own Ralph Doppler who successfully caught 13 salmon ranging from 3-13 lb totalling 88.5 lb . He enjoyed obvious success in all seven pools using a combination of shrimp and worm.
The total catch for this month is 77 salmon and is no reflection of the abundance of salmon in the pools. The low water levels of the river make it difficult to entice the lethargic salmon with any combination of fly, worm, shrimp or Toby.
