Leinster - River Barrow - Latest Reports

River Barrow - Monday, 7 July 2003

River BarrowJohn Flynn, staff member of the Southern Regional Fisheries Board reports that three salmon each weighing around the twelve-pound mark were caught in the last weekend of May by anglers fishing just under the weir at St. Mullins on the River Barrow. Just a short distance downstream in the area known as the "run", Joe Nolan of the Carlow/ Graigcullen Angling Club landed a 2 lb sea-trout. This fish was very fresh into the system. At Fennellscourt, which is located just off the Borris - Bagnalstown Road as one approaches Bagnalstown, local contacts say that fishing for salmon has been superb. Many of the fish caught weigh in around the ten to twelve-pound range. Best fishing from the public towpath side, which is non club. Meanwhile, upstream at Milford, heartbreak was the name of the game for a visiting angler from outside the region. While salmon fishing downstream of the weir, he managed to hook a fairly large salmon believed to be in excess of twenty-pounds. In his haste to land the fish, he lost it right at the shore. Please note that the suspected weight of the fish is unconfirmed, but that the actual losing of the salmon was witnessed. Message for the future is "make haste slowly".
