River Barrow - Friday, 27 June 2003
John Flynn from the Southern Regional Fisheries Board reports that in the week ending May 18, those anglers that ventured out in the unseasonal weather were rewarded with excellent fishing. From Goresbridge to Bagnalstown, salmon between 8 and 14 lb were landed. Anglers at Goresbridge say that it was one of the best early season runs that they have observed. Those who caught fish were from counties Kilkenny, Carlow, Wexford, Wicklow and Dublin. At Bagnalstown, anglers fishing from the towpath area reported that they caught seven salmon in the 12 lb range. Since last Sunday May 18, the Barrow has risen to flood, thus reducing the angling activity.
On the trout angling front, the inclement weather has impacted to some degree on evening fishing, with sparse fly hatches. However those who persevered were delighted with the result. At Clonterry, a State Fishery leased to Mountmellick Angling Club, members and visitors from Dublin caught trout up to 1.5 lb, all to the fly. Indeed those anglers who were spinning found it hard to entice fish. In Carlow, a couple of trout up to a pound weight were caught at the Captains Island. Those anglers who normally fish the River Burren say that the trout stocks are plentiful but that the harsh winds of recent times are hindering quality angling.
