Munster - Upper Caragh - Latest Reports

Upper Caragh - Friday, 16 May 2003

Upper CaraghDermot O’Carroll reports that “Spring, with its fantastic summer weather, has sprung profusely into blossom. We celebrated the driest March and April on record. Meanwhile, our fly fishermen grumbled quietly and scowled good-naturedly, their expectations waned as they went lack-lusterly about the business of casting care and catching dreams. Suddenly it was the end of April, and amazingly in spite of unfavourable conditions, a respectful 24 salmon were taken. The best catch being a beautiful fresh female of 16 lb. Gunter Held of Offenback Germany, using an 8 foot rod and a #5 line on the fly (a Black Pennell, size 12), demonstrated a real artistic skill to the joy of his admiring wife, Jutta, a great fisherwoman in her own right.

In spite of very low water levels and a shortage of rods, 21 salmon were caught on the river. Honourable mention goes to Noel Hickey with an 11.8 lb salmon caught in Pool 6 on the fly. Werner Gerold and Joseph Fox of Oberammergan Germany returned to the Caragh for their 27th year of fishing. Werner landed a gorgeous 14 lb salmon spinning in Pool 6. Not to be outdone by his close friend, Joseph caught a lovely fresh 8 lb spring salmon in Pool 9 on the fly on April 29 and an 8 lb in Pool 4 spinning, the following day. One of our regulars, Tommy O’Connor, had a lovely catch of 13 pounds in Pool 4 on a shrimp fly on Sunday, April 27.

Please call Glencar House Hotel on 353 066 976 0102 regarding reservations for accommodation, and fishing on Caragh Lake and the Lower River”.
