Upper Caragh - Friday, 18 April 2003
February got off to a very cool start, blustery winds and heavy rain and above average flows in the Caragh. Pools turned into lakes and our many playful rapids into class five furiously gorging torrents, awesome if kayaking was an option. Useless fishing conditions and frigid water temperatures did little to encourage spring salmon into our river system. The picturesque Caragh River took on qualities of the River Ganges in flood.
Our new Fishery Manager, Michael O’Shea, fiercely competitive and not to be outdone opened the season with a beautiful springer, all of 11 lb, caught on a “flying C” in pool #6. Two Cork fishermen followed with eight and nine-pounders, caught on a Toby. Much acclaimed multi talented, though modest fisherman, Leslie Wilkinson, winner of the annual best catch Trophy here four times, caught a very playful ten-pounder female with a “Brown and Gold Devon” in pool #9. Followed quickly by Michael O’Shea with a very fresh hen of 10.5 lb using a “Flying C” in pool #6. Michael is in fair fickle having just fathered a bouncing baby boy, Taigh, born with a rod in his hand. Mike and Norma’s first, tight lines and hearty congratulations!
Early March was productive as the river water flows decreased and temperatures rose slightly. John Tallon from the Isle of White, caught his very first Salmon in pool #8 using an “Flying C”. What uproar-ish excitement! With partner Stewart Hunt from Hampshire, England, ( not to be outdone), caught three beautiful springers. A 9, 10 and 10.5-pounder. One in pool number 5 with an “Flying C” and on Cloon Lough using a Toby. There was a great celebration that evening at the Glencar Fireside lounge.
