Munster - Upper Caragh - Latest Reports

Upper Caragh - Tuesday, 8 October 2002

Dermot O’Carroll, proprietor of the Glencar House Hotel sent the following report for September. “A very late summer broke-out in the mountains of Kerry and we experienced the most blissful of halcyon days. No rain since the 17th August left this hotel without water. It was “water, water, everywhere and nar a drop to drink” but once more Vincent O’Shea’s creative ingenuity saw us through and we managed to have ice-cubes for our drinks!.

And while the sunshine was an overdue blessing from the God’s, in light of one of the wettest years on record, it was in light of this, a little too late to offset what proved for Glencar to be a tourist season wash-out. This beautiful weather was not conducive to the procurement of salmon and fly-fishing. The docile waters of the Caragh River made Lough Caragh a better choice and this accounted for 11 of a total of 18 salmon caught. Four rods tied for second spot using a “Toby” all caught on Lough Caragh, while first went to Tom Decey with a catch of 10 lb on the River Caragh using a “Flying C”. Considering the scarcity of fishermen, not a bad month. We finish the season ahead of the past five years with a total catch of 287, all in all a reasonably respectable effort. And in bringing this season to a close, we are once more sadly reminded that Upper Caragh fishing is losing to retirement, Vincent O’Shea, after 38 years of dedicated unfailing service. Truly a fish of an altogether rare species, Vince, you have our heartfull blessings and gratitude. Come on you guys, send him a “gone fishing” card!”.
