Leinster - River Barrow - Latest Reports

River Barrow - Sunday, 18 June 2000

In the last week of May, the River Barrow continued to fish quite well with the best fishing reported from the Bagnalstown area. Anglers at Fennellscourt have captured salmon weighing up to 15 lbs. They reported that a lot of grilse were seen in the area. Indeed this area seems to be the only place where anglers were active. The usual areas of the river where salmon anglers normally fish are quiet with very few anglers about, despite the presence of salmon in these waters as well.

A report for the week ending Sunday 18th June states that the river continued to fish well with many reports of salmon catches. At St. Mullins, 4 grilse were caught on Saturday by an angler from New Ross while fishing the incoming tide. Earlier in the day Brian Nolan of Carlow landed two salmon, a 12 and a10 Pounder.

No salmon anglers were in the area on Sunday due to the high temperatures and very bright sunshine. Locals out enjoying the sun report that they saw a lot of fish jumping over the weir. Borris, Goresbridge, Slyguff, Fennellscourt and Bagenalstown are producing fish, mainly grilse. Goresbridge is the best area for fishing at the moment.
