Upper Caragh - Thursday, 23 February 2006
The opening of the Upper Caragh, in 2006, will go down in history. On the morning of February 18th, at approximately 10.30am, the first fin clipped hatchery salmon was landed. The fishery had in previous years planted out fry and fingerlings, but decided to develop the hatchery further in 2003. In the spring of 2004 approximately 30,000 smolts were released at the top of the system. Some concerns were raised at the time that eggs from spring salmon reared in a hatchery would only produce one grilse. It was a great thrill to all fishing the river on saturday to witness the first springer of the season and the fact that it was a hatchery fish made it more satisfying. The fish in question was caught by Richard Mee, while fishing pool 10. It fell to a black and silver flying ‘C’. This was a special day for Richard as it was his first salmon ever. Congratulations to him. The second fish of the season was landed by Fishery Manager Michael O’Shea. It fell to a copper toby. The fish weight was 11 pounds and it was very fresh. On Sunday the 19th February, the river had fallen about 8 inches from the previous day. Richard Mee, who had landed the first fish from pool 10, was eager to get started. While still on a high from the fish the day before, he hooked, played and landed his second fish in two days a beautiful sea-liced 13 pounds springer. This was a dream start to anyone's season.
